Hi there,
My name is Brent Gundesen, and I’m a New Zealand/British Series Director crafting cinematic, character-driven documentary films for global audiences.
My work spans BAFTA-winning observational documentaries through to high-profile talent-led and international access series, often involving sensitive or complex subject matter — helping to define editorial direction, tone and visual style from development through to delivery. I’ve spent the majority of my career in the UK working across premium series for platforms including Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, the BBC and Channel 4.
Outside of work, I’m a husband to Sara and a dad to Ollie and India — something that keeps me grounded and continues to shape how I connect with people and the stories they trust me to tell.
At the heart of everything I do is people. I place huge importance on building genuine trust with contributors — creating an environment where people feel safe, respected and truly heard. Whether filming in someone’s home or following them through pivotal moments in their lives, I approach each story with empathy, honesty and care, allowing the camera to capture something real.
I’m known for combining strong editorial instinct with a confident, cinematic approach to storytelling — creating films that feel both visually distinctive and emotionally grounded. This stems from my background in post-production as an editor, before moving into producing and shooting, which continues to shape how I direct today. I’m always thinking about narrative, structure and character — not just what works in the moment, but what will ultimately carry a story in the edit. That foundation, combined with experience filming in over 40 countries, allows me to work confidently across a wide range of environments, teams and storytelling styles.
While I now primarily work as a Series Director with full narrative oversight, I remain comfortable self-shooting when it adds creative value — offering flexibility without compromising on quality.
So, if you’re looking for someone who will take both the filmmaking and the people behind it seriously, I’d love to chat.
